Join the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative in welcoming Professor Spencer Banzhaf for the Notre Dame Seminars on Sustainability Series. We invite all attendees to stay afterward for lunch, conversation, and fellowship in 125 DeBartolo Hall as we work together to grow this vital network on campus.
Spencer Banzhaf, Professor in the Department of Agricultural & Resource Economics at North Carolina State University, will join the Notre Dame community in the ongoing lecture series Notre Dame Seminars on Sustainability. As demand grows for cost-effective and scalable climate action, 41 cap-and-trade carbon markets have emerged worldwide. These markets now cover 26% of all global emissions and nearly half of industrial emissions. However, they largely exempt nature-based activities from their caps and have consequently failed to harness nature’s potential to sequester carbon at low costs and large volumes. Many programs allow project-based offsets to fill this void, but the credibility of these offsets has been undermined by findings that they often sequester little “additional” carbon beyond what would have occurred anyway. Professor Banzhaf argues that the solution lies in returning to the root idea of environmental markets and bringing nature-based carbon emissions and removals under the cap. The public seminar is on October 30th from 11:00 a.m.- noon in 129 DeBartolo Hall with a lunch reception to follow. This is an in-person, free, and non-ticketed event.
Professor Banzhaf’s expertise is in Environmental Economics and its implications for Financial Markets and Policy. He serves as the director of the Center for Environmental and Resource Economic Policy and is the editor for the Review of Environmental Economics and Policy.
For Students: This event counts towards the Sustainability Cup. A sign-in sheet will be available at the event.
